I was up on stage at Legends Night Club which is the on campus club where I go to school: the University of Notre Dame. As me and the band I was playing with, A Face For Radio, geared up to play our second to last song, I said through the microphone “if any of you guys know this one, please sing along.” The song we were about to play was “Daisy’s Lullaby” and even though it’s my most popular single right now, it wasn’t likely that anyone was actually going to be able to sing along. Wrong. Of the 100 people in the crowd, 75 percent of them were able to belt out every word right along with me. At that moment I came to realization that I had written a song about a great American novel, one which most kids probably despised reading in high school, that was now being rapped about, out loud, on a Friday night, in a night club, by 75 college kids. That is exactly the sort of impact I am looking to make.
Now the truth is that I will probably never write another song about a book again. There are two reasons for that: 1.) there are no other books that I am passionate enough about to come up with lyrics for and 2.) I don’t want to be pigeon holed as a literary rapper. Regardless, I intend to continue to portray an image and produce music that has a positive impact on those who choose to follow/listen to me.
The full mixtape “Be Somebody” will be available for download in the Fall of 2010, but for now I have decided to pre-release one song called “Still Shining”. In my opinion, “Still Shining” has a really cool feel, and it incorporates all sorts of aeronautical allusions to my career taking off. Hopefully it whets your appetite so that you’re itching to download the full mixtape when it drops in four months or so.
Alright, that’s it for now. Stay tuned for more info as the release date approaches. Oh, and keep chauncing world.
